Thursday October 18th 2012 - Swedish Maritime Administration
The Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) has signed a deal for seven AgustaWestland AW139s for use as search and rescue aircraft.
“The AW139 is a well-tested rescue helicopter optimal for Swedish conditions,” the company said in a statement.
The new helicopters will gradually replace the existing fleet of Sikorsky S-76C+/++ from mid-2013 until the end of 2014. The SMA said the new helicopters would provide an increased capacity and capability in maritime and aeronautical search and rescue operations, and was part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the sustainability of the service.
The rescue helicopters are to be available for search and rescue operations both at sea and over land, and will be based at one of five stations in Sweden (Ronneby, Visby, Göteborg, Norrtälje and Umeå).
“It is very satisfying that in the future we will have an improved capacity and ability to save lives without increasing the total cost of operations,” said Noomi Eriksson, deputy director general and head of the Maritime and Aeronautical Search and Rescue Department at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
